NINE AL-SHABAB ISLAMIC extremists, most wearing suicide vests, stormed Somalia’s main court complex earlier today while the Supreme Court was in session, firing a barrage of bullets during a running gun battle with security forces that lasted two hours, officials said.A preliminary death toll stood at 16, including all nine attackers. The assault was the most serious in Mogadishu since al-Shabab militants were forced out of the capital in August 2011.Al-Shabab controls far less territory today than in years past, and its influence appears to be on the decline, but today’s attack proved the extremists are still capable of pulling off well-planned and audacious assaults. The attack on the Supreme Court complex began at around 12.30pm local time, sparking running battles with police and army forces. Two bomb blasts were heard and gunmen were seen on the roof of a court building firing shots, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.Police officer Hassan Abdulahi said he saw five dead bodies lying at the entrance to the court. The militants took an unknown number of hostages during the siege. Many other government workers and civilians in the court complex – a confusing labyrinth of buildings and rooms – hid while fearing for their lives.Travel warning issuedWestern officials knew militants had been planning something major. The British Foreign Office on Friday released a travel warning for Somalia that warned of a high threat of terrorism. “We continue to believe that terrorists are in the final stages of planning attacks in Mogadishu,” it said. The complex and sustained nature of the assault on the court system suggested militants hoped to inflict severe casualties. Later, a suicide car bomber rammed a vehicle carrying Turkish citizens. On a Twitter feed believed to belong to the militants, al-Shabab appeared to take credit for the attack. A posting said five militants from the “Martyrdom Brigade” took part in the “daring” attack.Interior Minister Abdikarim Hussein Guled said nine militants attacked the court complex, and that six of them detonated suicide vests. Three others were shot and killed during the assault, he said. Guled said he couldn’t immediately provide an overall death toll that included government officials and civilians.‘Pointless and pathetic act’Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon said the “pointless and pathetic act” would have no effect on the government’s commitment to progress. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Somalia is moving forward but the enemy of Somalia and “of all mankind” is trying to prevent the country from prospering.“I want the terrorist to know that our country, Somalia, is moving and will keep moving forward and will not be prevented to achieve the ultimate noble goal, a peaceful and stable Somalia, by a few desperate terrorists,” Mohamud said.Ugandan troops stationed in Mogadishu as part of the African Union force arrived at the scene and began taking up sniper positions on rooftops. The Supreme Court was in session and the court’s chief justice may have been the target of the assault, said a Western official who had been speaking to Somali officials. The official spoke on condition he wasn’t identified because he wasn’t authorized to release the information. The gunmen took hostages in the complex’s main courtroom and forced their way into other rooms in the complex, said another police officer, Abdinasir Nor.The court complex is a confusing maze of buildings and rooms, allowing for plenty of places to hide but also for many places for gunmen to take hostages. The armed men forced their way inside the complex and immediately set off an explosion, said Yusuf Abdi, who was near the court when the attack happened.About two hours after the assault began, survivors of the attack began coming out of the court complex. Some were crying and others held their heads in their hands.‘I never expected to make it out alive today’“I never expected to make it out alive today,” said Halima Geddi, who fled the court complex about two hours after the attack. She said she had taken cover behind an outer wall. “There is no peace. No one protects us. I came to see my boy who was supposed to be tried here.”At about 3pm a suicide car bomber rammed his vehicle into a car carrying Turkish citizens to the airport, said Mohamed Anjeh, a police commander.Mogadishu’s main government center is heavily guarded with multiple security checks. However, the security at the court complex is not nearly as strong. The Ugandan troops who arrived on scene began pushing back on-lookers shortly after the attack began. Most militant attacks in Mogadishu are blamed on fighters from al-Shabab, the al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremist rebel group in Somalia. Al-Shabab ruled Mogadishu from roughly 2006 until August 2011, when African Union and Somali forces pushed them out of the city. Since then the al-Shabab extremists have launched suicide bombings on the capital city every few weeks.Despite those intermittent attacks, Mogadishu is generally considered more peaceful today than most of the previous seven years.Read: Danish brothers charged with plotting terror attack > read more
While electric cars are all the rage, analysts are suggesting that a different type of e-vehicle will become pretty popular too: electric bikes.Pike Research has released a new report that suggests that the number of electric bikes and scooters on the road could grow from 11 million this year all the way to 138 million in 2017. While the report says that scooters will likely outsell bikes by around six to one worldwide, those numbers will be quite different in North America where electric motorcycles could represent around 60 percent of all electric two-wheel vehicle sales.AdChoices广告“Electric motorcycles and scooters have strong appeal for many consumers,” senior analyst Dave Hurst said. “They are relatively low cost to own, do not take a lot of space, and are easy to maintain, therefore making them attractive for city dwellers. Governments also like these vehicles because they can utilize existing transportation and electricity infrastructure without the congestion problems and emissions impacts of conventional automobiles.”Via GOOD read more
The knowledge gap between planning and execution when it comes to DIY computing seems to get smaller every day. The latest example of this is the plug and play Spark Core, a project made to ensure adding WiFi to a project takes no time at all.Adding WiFi to an Arduino isn’t a new trick by any means. The WiFi shield for Arduino is available everywhere, it’s just not the easiest thing in the world to use. You have to use a MicroUSB cable connected to your PC if you ever need to update the firmware, which means you have to make that particular part of the board easily accessible. On top of this, the board itself is nearly as big as the Arduino board itself depending on which model you are working with.If someone were to come along and make a more flexible WiFi board that maybe didn’t take up so much space and was a little easier to maintain, it’d be pretty hard not to be a fan. Spark Devices seems to think they are the guys for the job with the Spark Core development board.Making a thumb sized snap in WiFi development board that can be used both on its own or with an existing Arduino kit is a neat trick. Making the board easy to connect to an existing network using an app on your phone and making the firmware easy to update over WiFi means it’s infinitely more useful for just about anything. The Spark Core is to be made available as an individual board or paired with four different shields, depending on what your uses might be. The board can be easily run on battery power with a custom shield and is open enough that embedded geeks can grab the JTAG shield for more in-depth projects. The goal seem to be to make Spark Core useful as a single board that anyone at any skill level can use.Spark Core is a Kickstarter project that quickly blew by its $10,000 goal. You can still back the project at $39 for a Core, or up to $2,000 if you’ve got a completely custom project in mind and want Spark Device’s help in building a custom shield. Spark Core is a great way to see how quickly DIY computing projects are increasing in popularity, and making it incredibly easy to move your project to the Internet. read more
Google has updated their G+ Android app today, and in doing so added one more feature to a growing list of things that will require you to use their social network to access. As part of the I/O keynote for this year, Google announced a ton of features for most of their headlining products. Alongside these feature rollouts was the ability to beta test the new Maps service. This invite-only (for now) Google Maps is beautiful, fluid, and feels like it isn’t terribly far from a public release already. That noted, it didn’t take long to notice that there was a big feature missing from the new Maps: Latitude. The social service for Maps made it easy to add friends and place them on a map of the world, so you can see where they are. As long as each user had the other added, you could see where your friends were anytime they allowed that information to be shared. This was completely missing from the new Maps, and at first it was easy to assume that the feature would be added as the product got closer to launch. Now, with a Google+ update to Android, it’s clear where that feature has been moved to.For Google, this probably seems like a no brainer. If you’re using Google+ on your phone, you can share your location with specific circles. All from within the app, you can now see the locations of friends that have chosen to share that information with you. Google has kept pretty good pace in releasing iOS updates within a month or so of the Android version, and Latitude is still a part of old maps, so it’s not like the feature is dead yet and it’s not as though anyone is without the feature if they use it a lot. As the iOS version of the app updates, everyone on Google+ will be using the new location sharing function, and Latitude will only be used by those who don’t live their lives inside Google’s playground. If you’re prepared to live in Google’s playground, the experience is really fantastic. The new Google+ works really well. Hangouts, while in need of some fine tuning, is well on its way to being a proper unified messaging service. The new Maps, the updates to Chrome, all of it looks and feels really nice. How long will it be before you can’t just pick and choose the Google services you want to take advantage of? How hard will Google make it for you to use one-off features without being fully plugged in to their ecosystem, and perhaps more importantly how difficult will it be to use a service that isn’t integrated into the Google way of doing things? It feels like these are questions that won’t really have answers until enough people realize that trying to leave the Google playground will be to difficult to be worth it.Eventually, the new Maps will be released to the public. It will be smooth, beautiful, and full of new features. Location sharing, if it is available from Maps at all, will require your Google+ account. read more
Stay on target A Tale of Two Wonder WomenSDCC Announcement: IDW Games Brings 90s Nick to Life With the critical acclaim and success of FX’s Legion series, all eyes have been on their next X-Men based series premiering on October 2nd, The Gifted. The SDCC panel dedicated to The Gifted dropped a brand new trailer in excess of three minutes giving the lucky attendees a lot to take in.Firstly, similar to Legion it’s very clear from the onset that they are sticking to many of the elements that worked for their previous X show. No spandex or heavy leather outfits, no giant robots destroying buildings, and dealing deep into the deep catalogue of X-Men characters to tell a fresh story. The story appears to center around a brother and sister, Andy and Lauren Strucker, who have recently discovered they have mutant powers. They appear to be based on the twins that make up the character Fenris. In the comics, Fenris are the twins of Baron Von Strucker, a Nick Fury villain. In The Gifted, Andy and Lauren’s dad appears to be working for the antagonists so while this is definitely a big change up from the comics, they are keeping some of the framework to tell the most compelling story possible. It’s important to note that Andy and Lauren are both in high school as well. Like Marvel Studios and Sony have done with Spider-Man in their latest movie installment, Fox seems to be going back to the roots of the X-Men by the story revolve around younger characters as the original run of comics and New Mutants did. Considering that live action X-Men has been going on for nearly two decades now, this is a move that shows how Fox still has plenty of ideas on how to handle this franchise and that they’re keeping it in good hands.Andy and Lauren Strucker don’t have to go through all of this alone though. Thunderbird, Polaris, Blink, and Eclipse are here to help protect them while they figure out who they are. The trailer shows us far more about the kind of dynamic these characters are going to have with each other which was thrilling to watch. While we did get a glimpse of the dynamics we’ll be seeing with our protagonists; we don’t get much of an idea of what the antagonists are planning other than to send little robots after our mutant heroes so they can run up the special effects budget. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The series hardens back to X2: X-Men United and X-Men: Days of Future Past where instead of a monster of the week the X-Men are tackling more complex social issues. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as Bryan Singer is one of the Executive Producers on board. One thought that will linger after you watch the trailer is when exactly does this take place in the timeline? The series seems somewhat connected to the movies and mentions how the X-Men and Brotherhood seemingly no longer exist. It was mentioned in Logan how the X-Men have not been around for some time, but this series so far doesn’t seem to have the goal of setting up a near dystopian future so it’s possible that this may be an alternate timeline.Fox has really been nailing the X franchise lately, and The Gifted doesn’t appear to be an exception. Tune in Monday, October 2nd to catch the premiere, and make sure you keep an eye out for the Stan Lee cameo!Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. read more

To address the alarming air pollution in the capital, city’s youngsters have taken it upon themselves and organized ‘#Breathe’ – a 12 day clean air campaign in New Delhi on the occasion of Earth Day, observed on April 22. The campaign is the brainchild of Aadyaa Singhania, a 17 year young passionate student who is an environmentalist in spirit. Aadyaa with her friends started this campaign on April 10 at Moti Bagh Crossing and will carry it on till Earth Day. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThe drive will also be simultaneously replicated at ITO crossing till April 22. They are also asking commuters to share their ideas to prevent air pollution, on the FB Page #Breathe. Later, these youngsters will help in fund raising and implementation of the best ideas. The young enthusiasts are distributing anti-pollution masks and spreading information on basic steps which one generally overlooks but can play a vital role to check alarming levels of air pollution in the city. Simple things such as switching off engines at signals, getting vehicles serviced at regular periods, using recommended grade of lubricants, planning routes prior starting for some place, maintaining adequate air pressure in tyres, avoid extra loading, carpooling, preferring public transport, etc. will be cultivated among commuters. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveAadyaa is also reaching out to a number of schools to enlist volunteers amongst students. She has successfully organised awareness sessions on environment conservation at Sadhu Vaswani School, Blue Bells International and Mount Carmel in the city. Students of these schools will also take part in the campaign on Earth Day at Moti Bagh Crossing. Health issues involving asthmatic attacks since her childhood days made Aadyaa aware of the need of clean air quality which was a prime reason for the suffering of many kids. Amidst all this, Aadya became a passionate environmentalist and because of her concern for the environment and desire to make a difference, she pursued a certificate course in “Introduction to Environmental Sciences.” Her stints in the field of environment conservation include her association with TERI, her work with Professor Rajam, Delhi University, to find a bacteria that consumes lead, a constituent of air pollution in Delhi as well as algae that is more efficient in conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen and her work with Ricardo India Pvt. Ltd., a Renewable Energy and Environment Expert amongst many others. Aadya’s trips from UK to Delhi in the past few years highlighted the stark contrast in the environmental conditions, especially Air pollution in London and Delhi. Moved to make a change, Aadyaa first studied the similarities and the evolution of both the cities and has now taken upon herself to create awareness as well initiate doable projects. In her attempt to make a difference at the policy level, she has researched and written a paper on the inclusion of pollution as a subject in the curriculum. She has also tried to highlight how pollution is taught to the school children in the US and UK under the Fulbright Scholarship Institute vis-a-vis NCERT. She is determined to pursue her interest and continues to contribute in raising awareness amongst the youth and finding big and small solutions for improving air quality in our city and securing a healthy future for generations to come.Giving her perspective about her present campaign #Breathe, Aadyaa Singhania noted that everybody in India feels that somebody else should take care of pollution problem and very easily passes on the blame to the government. It is certainly the responsibility of every individual towards the environment. We are the ones that are contributing to deteriorating of the environment. While we have been progressing as a human race, we have been doing it at the cost of the environment. It is time that we payback our longstanding debt to the environment. We can start by keeping the environment green by planting trees and bio composting, by watching ourselves and making sure we don’t contribute negatively to the air quality such as by being more mindful in the choices we make in our day to day life for example- switching to better quality fuel, reducing DG sets, making sure our cars meet the emission norms etc.Speaking about the Clean Air Campaign #Breathe that she is currently driving in the capital, she added, “I intend to extend this program on a larger scale to many more crossings across the city. I’m reaching out to a number of schools to enlist volunteers amongst children like me who can influence their parents in a positive manner. After all it is our future that we are trying to protect.” read more
Share MIAMI — Miami International Airport is closing a terminal this weekend because security screeners have been calling in sick at twice the airport’s normal rate as the federal government shutdown stretches toward a fourth week.Friday marks the first day screeners will miss a paycheque, and airport spokesman Greg Chin said there’s a concern there won’t be enough workers to handle all 11 checkpoints during normal hours over the weekend.Chin said Terminal G will close at 1 p.m. Saturday, reopen for flights Sunday morning and close again at 1 p.m. that day. The terminal serves United Airlines along with smaller carriers. Its closure means restaurants and shops that depend on departing flights also will close.“We felt we had to make a decision before the weekend,” Chin said. “They’re erring on the side of caution.”Chin told The Miami Herald that some passengers have complained about longer waits, but there’ve been no abnormal security delays.Terminal G is the slowest concourse at the airport, with about 12 planes a day flying out after 1 p.m. That’s about 3 per cent of the roughly 450 flights that depart each day. Terminal G’s flights will be diverted to other terminals this weekend.More news: Help Princess Cruises break the world record for largest vow renewal at seaBut Chin said that if the shutdown continues and additional screeners don’t show up for work, the airport could be forced to close a security checkpoint at terminals that have multiple entry points, such as Concourse J or Concourse D.
