OTTAWA – The wife of Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson has filed an order of protection against the girlfriend of one of Karlsson’s teammates, alleging harassment and cyberbullying. In an application for a peace bond filed May 4 in an Ottawa court, Melinda Karlsson alleges that Monika Caryk posted hundreds of derogatory online messages aimed at her and her husband. Caryk is the longtime partner of Senators forward Mike Hoffman.“Monika Caryk has uttered numerous statements wishing my unborn child dead,” Karlsson said in the sworn statement. The Karlssons’ first child, a son named Axel, was stillborn in March. The Ottawa Citizen was first to report on the allegations.Karlsson also claimed that Caryk “uttered that she wished I was dead and that someone should ‘take out’ my husband’s legs to ‘end his career.’“Monika Caryk has posted over 1,000 negative and derogatory statements about me as a professional.”The Senators said in a statement Tuesday that the NHL club is “investigating this matter in co-operation with the NHL and will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the safety and privacy of our players and their families.”Hoffman denied the allegations in a statement to the Citizen. An email to Hoffman’s agent seeking comment was not immediately returned.According to Canada’s Department of Justice website, a peace bond is a protection order that requires a person to keep the peace and be on good behaviour, and is used when that person appears likely to commit a criminal offence, but there are no reasonable grounds to believe that an offence has actually been committed. The Karlssons were the target of cyberbullying in March. An ugly online comment was posted on Erik Karlsson’s Instagram account after the defenceman made a post acknowledging the support he and Melinda received following their son’s death.“I feel bad for the baby he didn’t have a chance with Melinda popping pain killer medication everyday,” posted an Instagram user known as sandydandy45.Karlsson’s response suggested the comment was part of a larger pattern of harassment.“How dare you,” he posted. “You have been making fake accounts and buying hacked ones for months to harass me and my wife but this is an all new low even for you. You are a disgusting person.”Karlsson was drafted 15th overall by the Senators in 2008 and has blossomed into an elite NHL defenceman, while Hoffman is one of the team’s top forwards with four straight seasons of more than 20 goals. The allegations are the latest controversy in what his been a terrible few weeks for the Senators. Assistant general manager Randy Lee has been charged with harassing a hotel shuttle driver in Buffalo during the NHL’s pre-draft scouting combine two weeks ago, and the Senators confirmed that he has a July 6 court appearance. And late last month, former captain Daniel Alfredsson told Ottawa blogger Sue Sherring that he hoped the Senators get a new owner in place of the embattled Eugene Melnyk. read more

I don’t think the rate of capitalization is going to be as strong as we had in the last couple of months, but people just want to put money into the market.”Nakamoto said the confidence in stocks has been fuelled partly by a lack of other choices.“Interest rates are so low … real estate is cooling. This is really the only game in town, the equities market,” he said. The gold sector was the leading advancer on the TSX and soared 5.81% as June bullion made up for the $19.20 it lost on Tuesday, by surging ahead $24.90 to US$1,473.70 an ounce. The companies announced the deal in September. The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit Wednesday asking a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., to block the sale. The agency said the deal would eliminate a major competitor and leave Electrolux and Whirlpool as the only big companies in the U.S. selling cooking appliances such as ovens and ranges. Electrolux sells most of its products in the U.S. under the Frigidaire brand. The Justice Department is particularly concerned about “contract channel” sales, where suppliers sell to homebuilders; to the builders and managers of apartment buildings and condominiums; to hotels and motels; and to governments. It said Electrolux has made major efforts to win more contract channel business over the last decade, but is now seeking to acquire GE’s business instead of competing with it.GE began to look for a buyer for its appliance division in part because of increasing competition, though, especially from up-and-coming Asian brands like Samsung and LG. GE and Electrolux will argue that the competitive landscape of the past is very different from the one they are now facing as these newer brands push into the U.S. market. The Justice Department is relying on numbers “that don’t predict very well what could happen,” said Joe Sims, an antitrust lawyer at Jones Day who is representing Electrolux. He spoke on a conference call with reporters. Samsung and LG have increased their market share to 20 per cent of the large appliance market from almost nothing a decade ago, Sims said.Sims also said that the big buyers of these appliances, retailers such as Home Depot and Best Buy along with major home builders, are so powerful that they pressure manufacturers to keep prices low and competition fierce.Electrolux said in a statement that the Justice Department’s lawsuit runs counter to its decision to approve Whirlpool’s acquisition of Maytag in 2006. Similar anti-competitive concerns were raised then by Justice Department staff, because Maytag was a major Whirlpool competitor, but the department leadership declined to try to block the sale.Electrolux is based in Stockholm, and the deal would be its largest acquisition ever. Electrolux is ranked as the world’s second biggest home appliance maker after Whirlpool.GE CEO Jeff Immelt is trying to reposition GE into a more-focused conglomerate that manufactures and services big, complex equipment such as aircraft engines, locomotives, medical imaging machines and oil and gas drilling equipment. It sold NBCUniversal to Comcast Corp. and also sold its insurance operations, spun off its consumer credit card business into a new company called Synchrony Financial, agreed to sell its GE Capital lending business and most of its GE Capital Real Estate unit and said earlier this month that it will sell its private equity business.Shares of GE rose slightly Wednesday, closing up 9 cents to $26.66. read more
Penn State football coach Joe Paterno guided the Nittany Lions to a 10-7 win against Illinois Saturday. The win was the 409th of Paterno’s career, making him the all-time wins leader among NCAA Division I coaches, and it might have been his last. PSU associate athletic director Jeff Nelson announced Tuesday that Paterno’s weekly media availability had been cancelled as a crowd of approximately 200 members of the media waited to enter the press conference. Some members of the assembled media likely weren’t there to talk about the Nittany Lions’ upcoming game against Nebraska, though. On Friday, Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly charged former PSU defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky with 40 counts of child abuse. The now-former university president for finance and business, Gary Schultz, and athletic director, Tim Curley, were also charged with perjury and failure to report child abuse. Sandusky met the children he allegedly abused through a program called The Second Mile, which he founded, according to a press release from Kelly’s office, which also said: “Some of those assaults allegedly occurred while Sandusky was a coach at Penn State while others happened on the Penn State campus and … in the locker room of the Penn State football team at Lasch Hall, to which Sandusky apparently had unrestricted access to as part of his retirement agreement with Penn State. It was the activity in those football locker rooms, first reported by a victim in 1998 and again by a witness in 2002, that are particularly disturbing.” The release also said that a graduate assistant witnessed Sandusky assaulting a child in 2002 and reported the incident to University officials. It goes on to say Paterno also “heard about the sexual assault of that young boy in the football locker room and reported that incident to the top administrators at the university.” Rich Scarcella, a PSU beat writer since 1989 for the Reading Eagle newspaper in Reading, Pa., said Paterno did what he was legally obligated to do, but some people think he should have done more. Scarcella said that while Paterno shouldn’t be off the hook, university president Graham Spanier should be the first to go. “I’m not saying Paterno shouldn’t be fired. There’s a public sentiment that (Paterno) should have done more,” Scarcella said. “In my opinion, the university president’s job should be in jeopardy, and I would fire him before I fire Paterno. He (the president) should be fired.” But according to a New York Times report, the board of trustees at PSU is already planning Paterno’s exit, which may come in days or weeks. Lexi Belculfine, editor-in-chief of PSU’s student newspaper, The Daily Collegian, said that students and alumni alike have demonstrated impassioned responses on campus in State College, Pa. “It’s interesting because it’s not only the student body that is reacting,” Belculfine said. “Anyone who has any connection with Penn State is feeling this. Today, we actually watched a 1975 graduate of Penn State burn his diploma on the steps of our administration building. “That just shows the passion that people feel about this and the anger that is kind of burning across the entire campus right now.” As Buckeye Nation knows all too well, PSU is only the latest Big Ten power entangled in an off-field controversy. PSU’s legal trouble come as Ohio State football awaits a ruling on its NCAA violations. In December, it was revealed that six OSU players — Terrelle Pryor, Daniel “Boom” Herron, DeVier Posey, Solomon Thomas, Mike Adams and Jordan Whiting — had sold Buckeyes memorabilia in exchange for improper benefits in the form of tattoos. Five of the players were suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season, and Whiting received a one-game suspension. Pryor departed the university June 7 to pursue a professional career. Former OSU coach Jim Tressel, who was informed of the violations but did not report them, was forced to resign from his post May 30 for knowingly fielding a team with ineligible players throughout the 2010 season. OSU instituted self-imposed penalties as result of the NCAA violations, which included vacating the 2010 season, including its 2011 Sugar Bowl victory against Arkansas and the $388,811 share in the Big Ten’s payment for the bowl victory. Scarcella said that, given how PSU and OSU handled their respective run-ins with law enforcement and the NCAA, both universities need a lesson in public relations. “Both universities need to be more forthcoming about what the (university officials) knew, and when they knew it,” he said. PSU has not committed any NCAA violations. Sandusky, who retired as Nittany Lions defensive coordinator in 1999, is being prosecuted in Centre County, Pa., where he allegedly abused the children. Schultz and Curley will be prosecuted in Harrisburg, Pa., where they allegedly perjured themselves before the investigating grand jury. Scarcella said he was very familiar with “Tattoo-gate,” adding that PSU’s problems dwarf OSU’s. “When you compare the sexual abuse of eight children to the selling of memorabilia for tattoos, it doesn’t compare,” he said. “It really doesn’t compare.” In Columbus, at least one OSU student — Brittanie Russell — agreed with Scarcella. Russell, a first-year in health sciences, said it was disturbing to think about Sandusky’s alleged crimes. “I feel like (Penn State’s issues) is worse, because that (would) demeans that person as a human, to take advantage of a child,” Russell said. “While … (OSU players) were just being, I guess, greedy and wanting money.” Lindsay Henton, a fifth-year in electrical engineering, said she was shocked when she heard of the crimes that allegedly occurred at PSU football facilities in State College. “If it’s one of those situations where (Paterno) gets kicked out, I’m going to be really disappointed,” Henton said. “You never want to see a career like that end on those terms just like we didn’t want to see Tressel’s end.” Scarcella said OSU fans’ are in better standing than the Nittany Lions faithful. “If you were to ask Penn State fans,” he said, “they would much rather be going through a recruiting violation or a selling memorabilia violation than what they’re going through right now.” read more

“My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.” *It’s been more than a decade since bachelor Romeo has known love. But, the last-known Sehuencas water frog’s luck is about to change.Pronounced “say-when-cuss,” the once abundant aquatic amphibian is the last of its kind; Romeo must meet a match soon to save his species. In an effort to raise awareness of (and money for) the frog’s plight, Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC) last year teamed with Match.com for a crowdfunding campaign. The lucrative crusade helped collect $25,000 from folks around the world—enough to fund several field expeditions to find Romeo a suitable mate.Equally successful was a recent excursion to a Bolivian cloud forest, where researchers from GWC and the Museo de Historia Natural Alcide d’Orbigny rediscovered the Sehuencas water frog (Telmatobius yuracare).Previous searches of the area came up empty; it took the team several days to spot any croakers this time. They eventually managed to rescue five—three males, two females—for a conservation breeding program.“It is an incredible feeling to know that thanks to everyone who believes in true love and donated … we have already found a mate for Romeo and can establish a conservation breeding program with more than a single pair,” expedition leader Teresa Camacho Badani, chief of herpetology at the museum, said in a statement.Romeo will surely get lost in Juliet’s eyes (via Global Wildlife Conservation/Museo de Historia Natural Alcide d’Orbigny)The work is just beginning, though.“We know how to successfully care for this species in captivity, but now we will learn about its reproduction, while also getting back into the field to better understand if any more frogs may be left and if so, how many, where they are, and more about the threats they face,” Camacho Badani continued.“With this knowledge we can develop strategies to mitigate the threats to the species’ habitat, while working on a long-term plan to return Romeo’s future babies to their wild home, preventing the extinction of the Sehuencas water frog,” she added. The five frogs, plus Romeo, will live at the museum’s K’ayra Center for Research and Conservation of Threatened Amphibians of Bolivia as part of a broader initiative to bring the species back from the brink of extinction.“There is always risk in bringing animals in from the wild to build an insurance population, and it isn’t a step that should be taken lightly,” according to Chris Jordan, GWC’s Central America and Tropical Andes coordinator. “But at this point it seems there are too few water frogs in the wild for them to retain a viable population over the long-term, so there’s a greater risk if we don’t do anything.”Now, Romeo officially joins the growing list of Match members who have found meaningful relationships on the dating website. Here’s to hoping he and Juliet live a happy life—free of feuding families, rhyming couplets, and untimely death.* William Shakespeare, “Romeo and Juliet,” Act II, Scene iiMore on Geek.com:Don’t Look Now: This Frog’s Butt is Staring At YouWatch: Spiders ‘Rain’ Down on Brazilian TownColor-Changing Beetles May Be Key to More Vivid Eyeshadow Palettes Stay on target Florida Frogs Find Shelter From Storm in Wind ChimesRomeo the Loneliest Frog Goes on ‘First Date’ With His Juliet read more

The Primary Election is tomorrow, and the Republican candidates for U.S. Senate are scrambling for high-profile endorsements. Mead Treadwell announced today he has astronaut Buzz Aldrin, in addition to Iditarod legend Martin Buser. Joe Miller boasts Fox TV host Mike Huckabee, so-called “World’s Toughest Sheriff” Joe Arpaio, and – just today — Focus on the Family Founder James Dobson. Dan Sullivan landed board members of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, Club for Growth and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.Download AudioLast week, after Miller announced he had Sarah Palin’s endorsement, Treadwell countered that he already landed her father-in-law, Jim Palin. Meanwhile, in the House race, Democrat Forrest Dunbar says he has the endorsement of Santa Claus. That is, a guy in North Pole who legally changed his name from Tom O’Connor to Santa Claus.Anchorage Pollster Marc Hellenthal says there’s a reason for all this activity. He says endorsements have an impact on voters, but he warns it’s not always positive.“The cost is that the endorsement ad – say, by Palin — goes to somebody who doesn’t like Palin,” Hellenthal says, “and they were voting for you before they got the Palin endorsement, and they say, ‘the heck with it, I’m not voting for that person anymore.’”In a two-way race, the cost of controversial endorsements is higher, he says, because an offended voter runs from your camp to your direct opponent. In a three-way race like this one, the offended voter will still drop you, but may vote for a candidate running too far behind to matter. Hellenthal says the sure-fire way to win at the endorsement game, is to get the blessing of a beloved Alaskan leader, someone who rates very highly with most voters.“That would be Lisa Murkowski,” he says, “and to my knowledge, she has not endorsed anybody.”In this Republican Senate race, though, a Murkowski endorsement may not be the golden ticket. Joe Miller is accusing anyone associating with her of being insufficiently conservative. read more
Virat Kohli Steve Smith.TwitterFormer Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has said that Indian team skipper Virat Kohli is a much better batsman than Australian cricketer Steve Smith and that Team India will beat West Indies 2-0 in the Test series, starting on August 22.The former Indian opener stated that the 30-year-old cricketer’s batting is more pleasing to the eye than Smith’s, reported the Times of India. He also mentioned that Team India will easily win the Test series and will complete a whitewash as West Indies does not have quality players.”Virat Kohli is a much better player than Steve Smith. If you look at Kohli and Smith (while batting), Kohli looks much more pleasing to the eyes in comparison with Smith. He is the number one batsman in the world,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by TOI.”The West Indies team don’t have quality players in their side who can give competition to this Indian team. I am sure India will win the two-match Test series 2-0,” Sehwag said.Sehwag went on to add that Kohli will not be able to break Sachin’s 200 Test matches record as the former cricketer does not think that any player can play more than 200 Test matches.”The one record no one can break is his (Sachin) 200 Test matches record. I don’t think anyone can break his record of playing 200 Test matches. I don’t think anybody can play more than 200 Test matches,” he added. The Indian skipper has become unstoppable in recent times as he is regularly getting runs and his hunger for more can be seen in the way he bats. The Indian run-machine has been on a record-breaking spree for a long time. The 30-year-old, who has played 239 ODIs, has 11,520 runs to his name with 43 centuries at an average of 60.32 whereas the former cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar has 18,426 runs to his name from the 463 ODIs. The master blaster has 49 ODI centuries to his name. File photo of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat KohliINDRANIL MUKHERJEE/AFP/Getty ImagesOn the other hand, in Tests Kohli has 25 centuries from 77 matches whereas Sachin has 51 from 200 matches. By looking at the above stats it is quite clear that if the Indian skipper continues to play like this, he will easily break the records of Sachin Tendulkar in the near future. The former explosive opener is quite sure about the fact that Kohli will break the little master’s record in the near future.”At the moment, Virat (Kohli) is the best batsman. The way he is scoring centuries, the way he is scoring runs, he is the best. I am sure he will break most of Sachin Tendulkar’s records,” Virender Sehwag told TOI.Team India are slated to play their first Test match of the two-match series against the West Indies in Antigua. It will be a part of the ICC World Test Championship. The Men in Blue have already completed a whitewash in the recently concluded ODI and T20 series against the Carribean with brilliant performances by captain Kohli in the ODIs. read more
An ethnic Uighur man talks on the phone in front of the Id Kah Mosque in the old town of Kashgar, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Photo: ReutersChina will step up a campaign against religious extremism in the far western region of Xinjiang on Saturday by implementing a range of measures, including prohibiting “abnormal” beards, the wearing of veils in public places and the refusal to watch state television.Hundreds of people have died in recent years in Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people, in unrest blamed by Beijing on Islamist militants and separatists, though rights groups say the violence is more a reaction to repressive Chinese policies. The government strongly denies committing any abuses in Xinjiang and insists the legal, cultural and religious rights of Uighurs, a Turkic ethnic group, are fully protected. While China officially guarantees freedom of religion, authorities have issued a series of measures in the past few years to tackle what it sees as a rise in religious extremism.New legislation, passed by Xinjiang lawmakers on Wednesday and published on the region’s official news website, widens existing rules and will come into effect on April 1.Workers in public spaces like stations and airports will be required to “dissuade” those who fully cover their bodies, including veiling their faces, from entering, and to report them to the police, the rules state. It will be banned to “reject or refuse radio, television and other public facilities and services”, marrying using religious rather than legal procedures and “using the name of Halal to meddle in the secular life of others”.“Parents should use good moral conduct to influence their children, educate them to revere science, pursue culture, uphold ethnic unity and refuse and oppose extremism,” the rules say.The document also bans not allowing children to attend regular school, not abiding by family planning policies, deliberately damaging legal documents and “abnormal growing of beards and naming of children to exaggerate religious fervour”.A number of bans on select “extremist behaviours” had previously been introduced in some places in Xinjiang, including stopping people with head scarves, veils and long beards from boarding buses in at least one city. The new rules expand the list and apply them to the whole region. While Uighurs have traditionally practiced a more relaxed form of Islam, the popularity of veils for women in particular has grown in recent years in what experts say is an expression of opposition to Chinese controls. After a period of relative calm, there has been a rise in violence in recent months in the Xinjiang’s southern Uighur heartland and a large increase in security.Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a “great wall of iron” to safeguard Xinjiang during the annual meeting of China’s parliament earlier this month. read more
