In 2010, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, two of the world’s richest men, created The Giving Pledge, an invitation to America’s wealthiest individuals to join Buffett and Gates in committing most of their fortunes to philanthropic causes. Those taking the pledge must provide a letter explaining the decision, and once a year the group will congregate to share ideas. Although slow to start, today at The Giving Pledge website the letters from 92 families are available to read. One oft sited reason for joining is the emotional return that comes from giving, helping, contributing, even above the intellectual awareness of what’s fair. When the question of whether giving was an emotional decision or an intellectual one was asked to a panel of philanthropists at the Forbes 400 Summit in New York last summer, Melinda Gates said that it’s both: “For me it’s a heart tug that I feel, that I carry every time I come back home. But then it’s your intellectual head that says, ‘How do I impact tens of millions? How do I use this money that’s at our disposal to have the very biggest impact?’ It’s your brain that hopefully takes over when you’re back home, to help guide that emotion that you feel that keeps fueling while you give.”Delighted with the recent commitments from 11 new families, in a press release Bill Gates said, “This new group brings extensive business and philanthropic experience that will enrich the conversation about how to make philanthropy as impactful as possible. Their thoughtfulness and deep commitment to philanthropy are an inspiration to me.”Copyright ©2012Look to the Stars read more
SEOUL, South Korea – Stock markets in Europe and Asia were subdued Tuesday as the afterglow from Wall Street’s overnight rally faded.KEEPING SCORE: Germany’s DAX shed 0.4 per cent to 12,239 and the CAC 40 of France fell 0.3 per cent to 5,122. Britain’s FTSE 100 was wobbling in and out of negative territory, edging 0.2 per cent higher to 7,191. S&P futures lost 0.6 per cent and Dow futures were 0.5 per cent lower, auguring a downbeat start for trading on Wall Street.WHERE THINGS STAND: Sentiment is jittery after it took just nine days for stocks to plunge 10 per cent from their latest peak, which was reached on Jan. 26. A drop of that size is known on Wall Street as a market “correction.” According to LPL Financial, it was the swiftest move from a record high to a correction in the history of the S&P 500. The index rose 1.5 per cent Friday but still wound up with its worst weekly loss in more than two years.US INFLATION: A key question is whether the correction has already hit bottom, said Jingyi Pan, a market strategist at IG. “Nevertheless, the worst is likely not over for this week for the simple reason that we have U.S. CPI sitting as a mammoth event risk this week,” said Pan, referring to the Wednesday release of U.S. consumer price index data for January. Concerns over inflation helped caused last week’s market plunge, so the data will be watched closely.ASIA’S DAY: Japan’s Nikkei 225 lost 0.7 per cent to 21,244.68 after gaining more than 1.0 per cent earlier in the day. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index added 1.4 per cent to 29,884.06 and the Shanghai Composite Index advanced 1.0 per cent to 3,185.86. South Korea’s Kospi rose 1.1 per cent to 2,395.19. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.6 per cent to 5,855.90.JAPAN OUTLOOK: Japan is due to release fourth quarter GDP data on Wednesday. The government looks likely to keep Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda on as central bank chief for another term. But the decision on the BOJ governorship comes at a time when concern is growing over the central bank’s strategy for eventually winding down its massive monetary stimulus.OIL: Benchmark U.S. crude fell 29 cents to $59.00 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It gained 9 cents on Monday. Brent crude, used to price international oils, dropped 16 cents to $62.43 per barrel in London.CURRENCIES: The dollar slipped to 107.55 yen from 108.66 yen. The euro rose to $1.2351 from $1.2289. read more
Rabat – The UAE’s national airline, Etihad Airways, has announced that “it will partner with the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) to attract 100,000 Chinese visitors each year by 2018,” according to Trade Arabia (TA). TA reported on Saturday that the project is supported by Morocco’s policy of waiving the visa requirements for Chinese nationals entering Morocco starting June 2016.Entitled “1,000 Chinese Visitors to Morocco,” the newly launched joint campaign between Etihad and the largest Chinese tour operator specializing in tourism to the Middle East and Africa, Beijing Yougo World International Travel Service Co. Ltd. (Uniway), is set to carry 1,000 Chinese travelers with Etihad Airways to Morocco between February and June 2017. Seeking to contextualize the remarkably increased interest Chinese tourists have in Morocco, senior vice president of global sales at Etihad Airways, Daniel Barranger said, “This is attributable to the visa relaxation policy granted by the Moroccan government.”Since November 2016 the UAE has been granting visas on arrival to Chinese visitors, thus making Abu Dhabi a distinguished stopover for visitors on their way to Morocco, according to TA.“They can spend a couple days enjoying Abu Dhabi, a modern and vibrant Arabian city offering a rich variety of remarkable leisure activities to tourists,”Barranger said.Earlier this month, ONMT Director, Abderrafie Zouite, revealed at a presentation held in Casablanca that Morocco has become one of the preferred destination for many Chinese tourists.“Just a few years ago, we would receive 800 to 1,000 Chinese visitors a month, today we are at more than 6,000 a month,” Zouite added. In accordance with Morocco’s 2020 Vision to increase the number of tourists coming to the country, Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism and ONMT have sought to attract Chinese and Russian visitors in order to improve Morocco’s tourism services and make tourism a more prosperous industry for the Moroccan economy. read more
The meeting of the Commission on Population and Development, which began on Monday and concludes on Friday, is examining the extent to which population growth affects the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), globally agreed targets on reducing poverty and eliminating other social ills by 2015.Although birth rates have been on the slide across the developing world since the 1970s, women in most of the least developed countries (LDCs) still have five children each on average, according to a policy brief presented by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).The lack of access to family planning and to modern methods of contraception is the major cause of this persistence in high fertility. “When individuals and couples are given the possibility of deciding how many children they want to have, they usually opt for much lower numbers than they used to,” Hania Zlotnik, Director of the Population Division, told the press at UN Headquarters in New York at a briefing focusing on the work of the Commission. Ms. Zlotnik noted that giving people the information and means for reaching their reproductive goals – without any kind of interference or coercion – has significant implications for economic and social development.Reducing population growth through cutting fertility rates, versus increasing mortality or restricting migration, is beneficial to the economy, as low fertility increases the number of people of working age per capita as well as output per capita, according to the Population Division brief. Benefits to economic growth also occur as lowering fertility leads to an increase in the supply of female labour, particularly in urban areas in developing countries. In addition, smaller family size allows for greater investment in the health and education of children in the longer term both from the family and government. 1 April 2009Rapid population growth, fuelled by high fertility, presents a barrier to reducing poverty levels and reaching other internationally agreed development goals, experts attending the current session of the United Nations population body said today. read more

The auto manufacturer said the figures represent the highest grossing July in the company’s history, and 44th consecutive month of growth year-over-year.“July was an exceptionally good month for retail sales throughout the product lineup, in fact it marked the highest July retail sales in our history,” said Dave Buckingham, chief operating officer for Chrysler Canada in a release. The company said it saw increases in sales for its Town & Country cars, Dodge Grand Caravan minivans, and Jeep Wrangler sport-utility-vehicles.Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. said it saw Canadian sales of 25,188 in July, down nine per cent compared with the same period a year ago. Senior midfielder Michael Italiano (24) passes the ball the ball during a game against Notre Dame March 25 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU lost, 13-7.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorSeeking its first back-to-back wins of the season, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (3-6, 1-0) is set to head east for a road showdown with the Delaware Blue Hens (6-5, 0-3).After starting the season 1-5, OSU has won two of its last three contests, including a 13-2 victory against Jacksonville last Saturday.Coach Nick Myers said preventing Jacksonville from controlling the tempo early was one of the keys in the win.“We got off to a fast start,” Myers said. “(Jacksonville) got in some foul trouble and our extra man had the opportunity to get on the field and execute. (Freshman midfielder) Jake (Withers) winning some faceoffs set the tone and defensively, when we had the opportunity down in our end, we made some timely stops.”Once again, the Buckeyes are to be shorthanded when they face the Blue Hens as Myers said the team will be without up to seven starters, including junior midfielder Turner Evans.Evans, who is tied for second on the team with 23 points this season, is doubtful after suffering a blow to the head against Jacksonville.“It’s been something for us all year where we’ve battled,” Myers said. “I think right now we’re up to seven starters that won’t be in the lineup this weekend that we projected at the start of the year. It’s a next man up mentality and we got some kids that are hungry to do that.”Delaware is coming into the game off a 10-5 win against Manhattan Tuesday. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Blue Hens.Led by coach Bob Shillinglaw — who is in his 36th season with the team — Delaware features a balanced offensive unit that includes seven players who have tallied more than 10 points this season, compared to only five for the Buckeyes.Senior defenseman Joe Meurer said the focus for the defense is to replicate its performance from the Jacksonville game against Delaware.“In the Jacksonville game, we really focused on staying tight, sliding appropriately at the right times and constantly having communication,” Meurer said. “I think if we stick to those keys, then it will carry over into the Delaware game.”On the season, OSU has struggled on the road, losing all four of its games away from Columbus. The Buckeyes will look to reverse that trend against a team that yields only 8.2 goals per game at home.Junior midfielder Rick Lewis said the venue doesn’t matter, as the Buckeyes are just excited to get back on the field.“It’s a great chance for the team to come together,” Lewis said. “We have the bus trip over there and the hotel to spend time with the family. It’s a great opportunity for us, home or away, we just love to get out there and play.”Game time is set for Sunday at noon. read more

Last week saw the 2013 running of the Evo Championships Series in Las Vegas, which brings together the best players for a video game tournament focused on fighting games. It’s also an event to make announcements about new or updated fighting games, and Capcom used Evo 2013 to announce Ultra Street Fighter IV.Street Fighter IV was first released to arcades in 2008 before coming to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2009. Then in 2010 we got Super Street Fighter IV, which introduced new online modes, 10 new characters, and gameplay tweaks. After that was Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, again adding new characters (this time 4) and solving balancing issues.Ultra Street Fighter IV looks likely to be the last update for the now 5-year-old game. It introduces another 5 new characters including Hugo, Elena, Poison, Rolen, and a secret character. In total that means the game will ship with 44 characters to choose from. There’s also 6 new stages to compete in, of those only Cosmic Elevator, Half Pipe, and Pitstop 109 have been confirmed.Of most interest to long-time players of the game will be the “completely rebalanced gameplay” that has been implemented based on the fan feedback Capcom has received. Basically, this is going to be the most well-balanced version of the game.If you’ve invested in previous versions of Street Fighter IV you may feel a little annoyed there’s yet another version to purchase. Capcom has realized this and so is offering two ways to buy the new game. You can pay $14.99 for a digital upgrade from either Super Street Fighter IV or Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, or you can pay $39.99 for the full game on disc or via download, which also includes over $40 worth of DLC.Ultra Street Fighter IV won’t be released until early 2014 and will be made available for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. However, if you pre-order it you gain access to 5 exclusive DLC costumes. I’m also guessing different retailers will work out their own pre-order exclusives in the coming months. read more

Dan Cohen AUTHOR House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday told reporters he favors a continuing resolution (CR) that extends only into December, allowing Congress to wrap up its work on fiscal 2017 appropriations before the end of the calendar year.“I would like to see us get all of our approps work done,” McCarthy said. “If we were into December, that would still give us the time to get the rest of the appropriations stuff finished.”McCarthy’s remarks provide one indication as to how congressional leaders plan to fund the federal government at the start of the new fiscal year. They also conflict with House conservatives, who are insisting on a six-month stopgap measure that puts off FY 2017 spending decisions until a new president and new Congress take office, bypassing eleventh-hour negotiations during a lame-duck session in late December, reported CQ Roll Call.Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday reiterated that Democrats will not support a six-month CR.Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Tuesday said the chamber would negotiate a CR before the end of the month, but he did not indicate how long it would last. Ryan appears to be leaning toward a shorter-term measure, culminating in either a single vote on an all-encompassing omnibus spending package or a series of votes on “mini buses,” which could include a few spending bills at a time.House Republicans are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss how the party should approach the year’s remaining spending decisions, according to the story. read more
