Paris – The French foreign ministry said, on Monday, that the level of vigilance concerning French nationals living in or visiting Morocco is “normal” in almost all regions the Moroccan Kingdom.Except for the southern frontier strip, almost all the Moroccan Kingdom is in the green, said spokesperson of the ministry Romain Nadal at a press briefing. The analysis of vigilance takes account of the different situation of each country, and inside the country, it takes into consideration the situation in each region, he said, adding that French travelers are advised according to colored references (green, yellow, orange, red) which show the level of vigilance and undergo real-time update. The ministry urged French nationals living in or visiting some 40 countries to remain vigilant concerning the security threat linked to intervention against ISIS, he recalled.Tourism minister Lahcen Haddad announced on Sunday the setting up of a watch cell to monitor the situation of the French market, saying that, thanks to that measure as well as to the Moroccan diplomacy, Morocco was placed under normal vigilance. read more
PARIS — French authorities were planning high security measures Tuesday for May Day demonstrations in Paris and across the country, as anti-government yellow vest protesters are expected to join trade union activists.Paris police banned demonstrations in the Champs-Elysees avenue and the areas around the presidential palace and the Notre Dame Cathedral. The main unions’ protest is planned Wednesday from Montparnasse train station to Place d’Italie in southern Paris.Police ordered shopkeepers, restaurants and cafes on the protesters’ path to close and are planning to search demonstrators’ bags and carry out identity checks.Government spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye said Tuesday the measures are aimed at protecting peaceful protesters as well as shopkeepers and other citizens.Last year’s May Day demonstration and more recent yellow vest protests saw violence and looting in Paris and other cities.Junior interior minister Laurent Nunez said some “radicalized” yellow vests, far-left activists and anarchists may try to disrupt the Paris march.Speaking Tuesday at the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, Nunez said the police priority will be to “systematically intervene every time there are wrongdoings.”Authorities are particularly wary of the black-clad, masked and hooded extremists who have joined in recent protests with the express goal of attacking police and damaging property. They often target symbols of capitalism or globalization, and turned out in the hundreds at last year’s May Day protest.French President Emmanuel Macron last week tried to quell the yellow vest movement by announcing tax cuts for middle-class workers and an increase in pensions, amid other measures. Many yellow vests consider the government’s plans insufficient, and want to keep alive the movement that started in November to oppose a fuel tax and quickly expanded into broader public rejections of Macron’s economic policies. The movement was named after the fluorescent jackets French motorists are required to keep in their cars.Associated Press, The Associated Press read more

With the Windows 8 launch just around the corner now, a quartet of promotional spots have been prematurely posted to YouTube. The leaked ads — unsurprisingly — focus on showing off the Windows 8 experience almost exclusively, with features like the Start Screen, side-by-side app snap, and Charms Menu front and center. While a tablet laying flat on a table is the primary PC used in the videos, the traditional Windows desktop running on a home computer does make a brief cameo in one of the spots, entitled “Work Hard, Play Hard.” Its appearance is punctuated by the appearance of PowerPoint 2013, though there’s no sign of the Ajax Steel Mill. Everyone’s already familiar with that part of the Windows experience, of course, so there’s really no need to show it off for more than a few seconds. However, the all-new Windows 8 UX is something that many still haven’t seen — and many of those who have seen it might not yet be sold. All four spots show off an interface that’s fast, fluid, and intuitive to use. All the basics are highlighted, from flicking in from the left to switch among running apps and rearranging the tiles on the Start Screen, to using the new, more flexible search tool. Skydrive also gets a brief plug, though the bit about taking your files and settings with you doesn’t offer much insight as to what’s going on. The short cloud photo storage demo, on the other hand, should resonate with users. Are these the spots you’ll see on TV when Windows 8 launches later this month? They seem a bit more like web-based promotional material, but who knows what Microsoft has planned for its mass-marketing campaign. This is, after all, the same company that dropped the Surface bomb on the tech world recently.More at NeoWin and BoInTheMix on YouTube read more
A former Bethel Police officer has been charged with attempted sexual assault, according to press release from the Attorney General’s office Thursday. The Office of Special Prosecutions is charging former Police Officer Aaron Fedolfi, 23, with one count of third degree attempted sexual assault by a police officer and one count of third degree official misconduct.Facebook photo of Aaron Fedolfi Fedolfi is currently at-large and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.Fedolfi attempted to sexually assault a person while the individual was in his custody, according to the press release. In early September, Fedolfi stopped a woman walking down Ridgecrest Drive, according to charging documents. He took her to an area near the Bethel dog pound and attempted to force her to perform oral sex on him.The woman “told Fedolfi to stop, and asked if he had ‘done this before’ at which point Fedolfi took his hands off her head,” according to charging documents. The woman was able to run away and eventually reported the crime to the Alaska State Troopers. Fedolfi was one of two officers on duty that night. After the incident was reported, Fedolfi was placed on administrative leave, according to a BPD press release Thursday evening. While on leave, Fedolfi notified the city of his resignation.“Since that time the City has had no contact with Mr. Fedolfi other than to process his final paycheck,” according to the release.A subsequent investigation revealed footage from Fili’s Pizza, a local pizzeria in town. The footage shows that in the early morning of Sept. 12, a BPD vehicle pulled over and stopped near a pedestrian. The pedestrian got in the vehicle and then the car headed in the general direction of the dog pound. In an initial interview with investigators, Fedolfi said the victim was lying. But when pressed in a second interview, his story changed.“Feldolfi claimed he had forgotten to tell troopers that he had picked up an intoxicated male,” according to the documents. However, when the interviewer told Fedolfi he had video footage, his story changed again. The video clearly showed the woman getting into his police vehicle.Fedolfi claimed the woman had been sexual provocative toward him. Fedolfi said he’d lied to investigators about being in contact with her. He denied any sexual assault or attempted sexual assault, saying he sped away from the area so people wouldn’t see her in his car.He says he later forcibly removed the woman from his vehicle, after she refused to get out. Fedolfi couldn’t explain to the investigator why he hadn’t followed BPD protocol–he didn’t record his interaction with the woman on his personal body camera or over the radio with police dispatch.“Fedolfi is presumed innocent of these charges unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” according to the press release.Police say anyone with information about Fedolfi’s whereabouts should contact the Alaska Bureau of Investigation at (907) 269-5611.Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect information from the Bethel Police Department’s press release and quotes from the charging documents. read more
Share Al Ortiz/Houston Public MediaFlooding near Cypress Creek in Houston on Aug. 29, 2017Houston’s population is growing quickly, but when Harvey hit last weekend there were far fewer homes and other properties in the area with flood insurance than just five years ago, according to an Associated Press investigation. The sharp, 9 percent drop in coverage means many residents fleeing Harvey’s floodwaters have no financial backup to fix up their homes and will have to draw on savings or go into debt — or perhaps be forced to sell.Houston’s Harris County has 25,000 fewer flood-insured properties than it did in 2012, according to the AP’s review of Federal Emergency Management Agency data.In percentage terms, the drop was even more dramatic in certain sections of the county: In Pasadena, just southeast of Houston, policies were down nearly 20 percent. Baytown, east of Houston, saw a 22 percent drop.A former head of the federal flood insurance program called the drops “unbelievable,” and criticized FEMA, the agency overseeing the program.“When you start to see policies drop like this, FEMA should have done something about this,” said Robert Hunter, who ran the program in the late ’70s. He estimates that fewer than two of 10 homeowners with flood damage have flood insurance.FEMA’s director, Brock Long, told the AP on Wednesday he was uncertain what was driving the drop in insurance coverage in Houston. He said storm victims who have lost their homes and are uninsured could seek assistance through the Small Business Administration, which offers loans.Experts point to a mix of reasons for Houston area residents deciding to drop coverage but lack of fear was a big one. The last big flood, Tropical Storm Allison, was 16 years ago, and people stopped worrying and wanted money they would have spent for insurance premiums for other items. The average cost for premiums in Harris County increased from $514 per year in 2012 to $555 annually this year, an increase of 8 percent, according to FEMA data.Jesse Trubia, president of a metal fabrication company, decided to pass on flood insurance when he moved to his two-story home on the outskirts of Houston several years ago. That decision will now cost him up to $30,000, he estimated. Up to one foot of water seeped into his home in Cypress. In total, Harris County residents were paying premiums on nearly 250,000 flood insurance policies in June, down from almost 275,000 policies at the end of 2012. There were roughly 1.75 million housing units in Harris County, but that includes apartment and condominium buildings, making it an imperfect figure to try to calculate what overall percentage of families are covered by flood insurance. The number of policies in Houston itself fell from 133,000 to 119,000, an 11 percent drop — roughly in line with the trend nationally. Over the same period, the number of flood policies across the U.S. dropped 10 percent, to 4.9 million.Jiles Daniels, a retired oil company manager, never wavered when he bought flood insurance on both his homes: one in Houston and another on an island near Cleveland, northeast of Houston. The cost is considerable: about $1,800 a year in premiums for the two houses combined. He thinks it’s worth it: The lower level of his island house went about four feet under water, he estimates, though his city home had been spared so far.Under current rules, most homeowners with mortgages living in high risk areas for flooding, called Special Flood Hazard Zones, must buy flood insurance. Most of the Houston area falls outside those most vulnerable zones, and many homeowners who aren’t forced to have coverage have decided to do without. One problem with the flood risk maps highlighted by Tropical Storm Harvey: They don’t take into account the risk of flooding from overcapacity drainage sewers and ditches or from water flowing toward a sewer or bayou. More than half of the flooding in Harris County over the years has been due to such problems. For Ronnie Walsh, 45, flood insurance was out of the question. He was laid off from a factory job in June and even before that money was tight. On Monday, Walsh was evacuated from his east Houston home by rescuers in helicopters after water started seeping into the house. He and his two sons, ages 4 and 6, had just a few bags of belongings with them when they arrived at a downtown convention center. They spent the night on flattened boxes, wondering how much damage their house sustained. He fears everything is gone. read more
In one week it will be four months since Baltimore Homicide Det. Sean Suiter was gunned down in one of the most violent neighborhoods in West Baltimore, under incredibly dubious circumstances. His murder remains unsolved. The narrative put forth by the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), under the leadership of former Commissioner Kevin Davis is, Suiter, while investigating a triple homicide, approached a “suspicious” man in a vacant lot between row houses on Bennett Place, in the West Baltimore community of Harlem Park. A violent confrontation between the man and Suiter, led to the 18-year BPD veteran being shot in the head with his own gun, while Suiter’s partner allegedly ducked for cover across the street.Meanwhile, the suspect described only as, “a Black male,” wearing a hoodie with a stripe seemingly vanished into thin air. Further, Suiter was gunned down the day before he was scheduled to testify in a corruption case linked to the notorious Gun Trace Task Force.Sean Yoes (Courtesy Photo)The homicide detectives Suiter worked side by side with for years seem to be no closer to discovering the murderer of their fallen brother than they were early on in the investigation. This despite the fact that there is a $215,000 bounty on the head of the person who killed Suiter, a husband and father of five. But, for many Baltimore residents, there is no mystery here; they believe Suiter was murdered by one of his own, a member of the police department he belonged to. And some former members of BPD have thrown dirt on the dead man’s name.During the recently concluded Gun Trace Task Force trial, disgraced former detective Momodu Gondo claimed he stole money with Suiter and other cops while on duty back in 2007.Also, the day after he was murdered, Suiter allegedly was going to testify about a case in 2010 involving another former detective and GTTF member, Sgt. Wayne Jenkins. AFRO reporter Stephen Janis reported in Feb., that Umar Burley was involved in a car chase with Suiter and Jenkins, which led to the death of a Baltimore police officer’s father. Burley’s attorney Steven Silverman alleges Suiter was among a group of cops dressed in black, wearing face masks and not displaying badges and it was Suiter who rammed Burley’s car in an attempt to detain him and steal money from him. Subsequently, a federal drug conviction against Burley was vacated.According to the Associated Press, a family member of another rogue detective from the notorious GTTF, Daniel Hersl, publicly alleged BPD is behind Suiter’s death. After Hersl’s conviction in the GTTF corruption case, his brother Steven Hersl told a group of reporters outside the federal courthouse downtown, “Is there an unsolved murder of a police officer? They know what the hell happened…My brother Danny Hersl knows what happened…And he’s going to do some talking.”Apparently, the Suiter case is so sordid the FBI refused to take over the investigation as requested by former Commissioner Davis back in Dec. read more

Since 1850, the total world population has exploded from approximately 1.2 billion to nearly 8 billion. In spite of this, the population of Ireland is still reeling from the effects of a short-lived, yet devastating event that occurred more than 150 years ago: the Irish Potato famine. In 1844, the population of Ireland was approximately 8 million. Yet, on August 10, 2018, the Irish-Amer FFF – Census Bureau reported the population of Ireland as just under five million. Remarkably, most of this population decline took place between the years of 1844 and 1849.County Clare, Ireland. How could famine have caused such a dramatic and long-lasting drop in population over such a short period? Unlike other famines, Ireland’s was not caused by a drought, nor by a sudden change in the climate, nor deterioration of the soil. It was caused by a combination of political corruption, religious persecution, and poorly-timed crop disease. The Republic of Ireland’s population (1841-2011). Information according to census figures.According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the “Act of Union,” legislation (passed on Jan. 1, 1801), brought Ireland, a colony of Great Britain, into a union as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.Since Irish Catholics were restricted from owning land, most of the farmland in Ireland was owned by wealthy families in England. These land owners rented the Irish lands to tenant farmers. An Irish Peasant Family Discovering the Blight of their Store by Cork artist Daniel MacDonald, c. 1847. For economic reasons, the Irish peasantry had become dependent on potato crop.Having no option to vote or even get an education, Catholic commoners in Ireland had no choice but to become farmers. And to pay their fees, the landlords divided each plot of land into small, one or two acre plots.Nearly all the crops and livestock grown and raised on the land went towards paying the landlords and enriching the purses of rich English gentry. Irish farmers were forced to reserve only a small plot of land, for growing potatoes to feed their own families.Suggested paths of migration and diversification of P. infestans lineages HERB-1 and US-1. Between this mass exodus, and the millions who starved to death, the population of Ireland dropped by millions before the famine finally ended in 1849.Famine Memorial in Dublin.Remarkably, the famine had nothing to do with a lack of food. The Irish farmers were still growing livestock and other crops. But these were being used as payment to their landlords. While millions managed to survive, the population of Ireland never fully recovered from the devastation of this famine.Scene at Skibbereen during the Great Famine, by Cork artist James Mahony (1810–1879), commissioned by The Illustrated London. However, the famine did seem to dramatically change the Irish people’s attitudes about their relationship with England. As the famine was ending, Irish Nationalists, inspired by the Paris revolution of 1848, began the first of a series of uprisings in an attempt to free themselves from Great Britain.Read another story from us: The Macabre Story of Sin-EatersIt would take many more years for the people of Ireland to finally become independent, breaking away from England in 1919, adopting a constitution and taking the name “Ireland” in 1937, and officially becoming the Republic of Ireland in 1949.Marea Harris is a professional freelance writer with over 7 years of experience. The rumour mill on Monday was busy discussing the look of President Anastasiades’ new cabinet which will be sworn in on March 1, with reports suggesting big names jostling for the foreign ministry and a greater focus on women.Ministers will continue to run their posts until the last day of their duties on February 28, government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides told the Cyprus Mail and cabinet will continue making decisions in the usual manner and is set to meet again on Thursday. In total, there are 11 ministerial posts. Anastasiades may make an announcement before March 1 to outline any changes to his cabinet but there is no indication at the moment as to when that may be, Christodoulides said.Already, the post of health minister, currently Giorgos Pamborides, is looking likely to need a new candidate after Pamborides all but said he was leaving.During Sunday’s victory ceremony, he told reporters it was too soon to tell, but he felt his time at the helm of his troubled ministry had come to an end and someone else should have the chance to take charge. After the national health scheme (Gesy) law was finally passed last year it appears it will fall to someone else to see it implemented. The post of health minister has seen the biggest turnover of all ministries in recent years.Anastasiades’ new cabinet may reflect the “broad cooperation” he outlined several times in the past week, particularly after the first round of elections last Sunday.Although that was largely interpreted to mean he was keen to work with other parties in a bid to garner more votes in Sunday’s runoff, he repeated the same thing during the proclamation ceremony.“I want to stress there are no ideological colours. What was said during the pre-election campaign was erased for me. What matters is how we will deal with problems tomorrow,” he said.“It is only through cooperation we will achieve everything we owe to the people of Cyprus.”Anastasiades may also be considering Diko members who supported him in his candidacy defying their own leader Nicolas Papadopoulos, but how that might pan out remains to be seen.Rumours are currently rife that Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou might take on the post of former deputy attorney general RIkkos Erotokritou, who is currently serving time in prison.Anastasiades may also have to consider Diko members who supported him in his candidacy defying their own leader Nicolas Papadopoulos but how that might pan out remains to be seen.Christodoulides is also reported to be up for the foreign minister post, a title that current Finance Minister Harris Georgiades is also after.Anastasiades however appears to want Georgiades to stay on in his current post and tackle non-performing loans as well as the cooperative bank.Currently, the post of foreign minister is headed by Ioannis Kassoulides who is expected to step down, a move that Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou may also follow through with however nothing is official.Anastasiades is also vying to keep Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides by his side, though his actual post is unclear.Disy MP Sotiris Sampson is rumoured to be eyeing the post of defence minister while Kyriacos Hadjiyiannis’ name, another Disy MP, has been suggested for the post of agriculture minister. The role of women is being increasingly stressed by top Disy brass. The party has said “we certainly want to strengthen the role of women” in the administration and names making the rounds to join Anastasiades’ cabinet are his spokeswoman and MP Annita Demetriou as well as MP Stella Kyriakidou who was by his side during his proclamation ceremony.Reports suggest he wants three women in his cabinet, with another possible candidate being Fotini Tsiridou, currently on the Cyprus Ports Authority board of directors. She was one of Anastasiades’ 101 voters who signed in support of his candidacy. If Christodoulides gets the post of foreign minister, rumours suggest it is possible Disy’s spokesman Prodromos Prodromou or director of the president’s office Michalis Sofocleous will take on the role of government spokesman. By George PsyllidesThe sale of certain parts of the co-op bank to Hellenic was the best solution, a professional services official told an inquiry on Tuesday, and the €74m price tag was reasonable.Grant Thornton partner Mark Byers said the transaction was the best alternative as liquidation would have caused significant effects.“The haircut option is not a practical solution, selling it to a third party was the best solution,” Byers told the panel investigating the collapse of the co-op bank.Byers’ firm had been appointed monitoring trustee by the European Commission to monitor the implementation of the obligations undertaken by the bank and the state. It was later tasked with evaluating the fair value of transferring certain parts of the co-op to Hellenic Bank.Speaking through an interpreter, Byers said the €74m price tag on the transaction was the best result under the circumstances. The government, which was the sole controller of the co-op bank since its nationalisation in 2013, has been heavily criticised over the low price it received. Critics also suggested that Hellenic cherry-picked only good loans from the co-op.Byers said it was debatable if all the loans were good.Byers, who oversaw compliance in 14 European banks, said the list drafted by the Commission included three categories: return to sustainability, burden sharing, and market distortion.“There were many challenges from the beginning because the bank was fragmented – 90 credit institutions that were merged. This raises issues of data, information, and governance, and the difficulty was significant.”There were also difficulties due to the size of non-performing loans, he said.Former commerce minister Giorgos Lillikas told the inquiry that the participation of political parties and the election of co-op committees by the members created an unusual structure that made it difficult to modernise.Prior to the island’s bailout in 2013, co-ops were supervised by a special department in the ministry of commerce.Lillikas, who was minister between February 2003 and June 2006, said political parties gradually participated, as they do in the case of school boards.“This structure and way of organisation made any change even more difficult,” he said. “Parties should simply deal with politics instead of the EAC and CyTA.”Lillikas said there were various causes for the co-op’s downfall, one being the lack of staff using professional standards, and the absence of internal audit.“We put emphasis on the auditor’s report, or the auditor-general (for state enterprises) who will publish a report at the end of the year, which in reality is an autopsy,” Lillikas said. The third reason was the participation of the political parties and this “complicated things even more.”You May LikeUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementAdd This One Thing To Your Dog’s Food To Help Them Be HealthierUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementUndoAngels And EntrepreneursRobert Herjavec Announce Venture Could Make You RichAngels And EntrepreneursUndoDr. Marty ProPower Plus Supplement3 Dangerous Foods People Feed Their Dogs (Without Realizing It)Dr. Marty ProPower Plus SupplementUndo Turkish Cypriot actions in Varosha ‘a clear violation’ of UN resolutions, Nicosia saysUndoConcern over falling tourism numbersUndoPensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoby Taboolaby Taboola read more

11:45 pm Related News Excerpts from a speech by Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on the 20th anniversary of the National Stock Exchange in MumbaiDecember 14 I compliment all those who were behind the idea of National Stock Exchange (NSE) and who nurtured the NSE over the last 20 years Recent events have reminded us of the criticality of financial market infrastructure institutions These include exchangesclearing housesdepositoriespayments infrastructureetc These must be seen as extended parts of the regulatory apparatus because they perform a legislative function as they are authorised to write by-laws They also perform an executive functionsuch as enforcing the by-laws and detecting violations of regulations Sowhile Parliament is the ultimate regulator and Sebi is the regulator of the capital marketI would like to once again emphasise that financial market infrastructure institutions also play a crucial role in regulation and discharging executive functions It isthereforeimportant that all our institutions maintain the highest ethics and highest standards of probity An ethics deficit can bring down the entire financial systemas we have seen in the past Recent incidents have alerted us to this fact and we should never take that chance again We must demand the highest amount of probity from the managers and owners of financial market infrastructure institutions I wish to take this opportunity to recall some of the reform initiatives concerning the capital markets taken recently We have reduced transaction costsincentivised listing on SME trading platforms and encouraged Sebi to play an active role in investor protection and awareness Investment Advisors Regulations have been put in place We have formulated a national strategy for financial education and repeatedly emphasised the role for foreign investment in the development of Indian markets Todayas we look back with pride on our achievementswe also need to look forward and contemplate our future growth agenda The capital markets still face various constraintswhich need to be addressed urgently and the NSEwith its accumulated wisdom and experiencecan help in strengthening the institutional edifice One important concern is the loss of the onshore market for the rupee and Nifty The volume of trading of the rupee in NDF [non-deliverable forward markets is said to be a multiple of volumes in official domestic exchanges Considering the size and linkages that prevail between onshore spot and forward markets and the offshore NDF marketsand the likely challenges to the launch of rupee derivatives on major global exchangesthere is an urgent need to resolve the issues inhibiting the growth of currency derivative markets We need to accelerate financial sector reforms to address these concerns Secondthere is an urgent need to increase the competitiveness of Indian financial markets It was with this objective that a standing council of experts was set up to analyse the international competitiveness of the Indian financial sectorto periodically examine the transaction costs of doing business in the Indian market and to provide inputs to the government for necessary action Thirddespite our best effortsbond markets are yet to develop in tune with our aspirations At every street cornerI am toldthere is an NSE brokerage firm where one can buy shares What puzzles me iswhy cannot one buy government or corporate bonds there How and where have we failed to make use of the same knowledge infrastructure for the development of the bond market In factthere is a need to translate the knowledge and institutional capacity from the NSE into an array of markets that can add to the field of organised financial trading in India spanning not just equitiesbut also corporate bondsgovernment bondscurrenciescommoditiescredit default swapsinterest rate derivatives and currency derivatives My fourth concern is increasing retail participation Going by the data from two leading depositoriesnamely the NSDL and CDSLthe investor accounts held by them together stand at 216 million accounts as on November 30 It is less than 2 per cent of the countrys population The degree of risk aversion is extremely high among Indian households It will be a challenge to drive investors away from the shine of gold and property and to channel investments into productive sectors of the economy My fifth concern is achieving greater financial inclusion and higher financial literacy One of the major steps needed for the success of the capital markets would be expansion of the investor base Thisin turnrequires a lot of effort in increasing financial literacy and awareness I think we are not doing enough to introduce courses on finance and capital markets in our higher secondary schoolscolleges and non-formal educational institutions LastI wish to make a reference to the recommendations of the FSLRC [Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission The FSLRC recommendations constitute the most important set of recommendations that the government of the country has received in the last decade Globalisation has ushered in an era of intense competition andas suchthere is need for continuous innovation and strengthening of regulatory and other financial sector governance institutions This was clearly demonstrated by the recent global financial crisis We attach great value to the recommendations of the FSLRC HoweverI acknowledge that passing legislation in terms of the recommendations of the FSLRC will take time Legislation and law-making in India is a complex process andlike in every other countryit will take time Thereforewe have decided that while we actively pursue making lawswe will make a beginning by implementing the non-legislative recommendations of the commission so that Indias financial sector stands on sound legal foundations and remains well regulatedefficient and internationally competitive A consultation-cum-taskforce-based approach is being adopted to pursue the recommendations I invite all of you to play a pivotal roleand to work with the government in implementing the non-legislative recommendations and ensuring the drafting and passage of the legislation For all the latest Opinion News download Indian Express App More Related NewsBy: Express Web Desk | New Delhi | Updated: May 21
