Dan Cohen AUTHOR House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday told reporters he favors a continuing resolution (CR) that extends only into December, allowing Congress to wrap up its work on fiscal 2017 appropriations before the end of the calendar year.“I would like to see us get all of our approps work done,” McCarthy said. “If we were into December, that would still give us the time to get the rest of the appropriations stuff finished.”McCarthy’s remarks provide one indication as to how congressional leaders plan to fund the federal government at the start of the new fiscal year. They also conflict with House conservatives, who are insisting on a six-month stopgap measure that puts off FY 2017 spending decisions until a new president and new Congress take office, bypassing eleventh-hour negotiations during a lame-duck session in late December, reported CQ Roll Call.Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday reiterated that Democrats will not support a six-month CR.Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Tuesday said the chamber would negotiate a CR before the end of the month, but he did not indicate how long it would last. Ryan appears to be leaning toward a shorter-term measure, culminating in either a single vote on an all-encompassing omnibus spending package or a series of votes on “mini buses,” which could include a few spending bills at a time.House Republicans are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss how the party should approach the year’s remaining spending decisions, according to the story. read more
